Three South Tyroleans and the European Championship dream

South Tyrol's professional female footballers continue to soar: on Tuesday, three local players were called up for the Italian national team.

Head coach Andrea Soncin has invited 35 players to the Azzurre's next training camp in Rome from May 20 to 23. Among them are Nadine Nischler, Katja Schroffenegger (both from Como), and Eva Schatzer (Juventus). For Schroffenegger, it's a comeback. The 34-year-old goalkeeper has been a member of the national team for many years and celebrated her comeback just this weekend.

Nischler and Schatzer, on the other hand, were only called up for the first time this season. Both enjoyed the best seasons of their careers. Nischler scored 11 goals for Como in her first Serie A season, and Schatzer won the Scudetto as a regular with Juventus. On Saturday, the 20-year-old could even celebrate the double with Juve in the cup final against Roma.

After the training camp in Rome, the squad will be called up for the two friendlies on May 30 against Sweden and June 3 against Wales, before the European Championship begins in Switzerland on July 2. There, the Azzurre will face Spain, Portugal, and Belgium in the preliminary round. "Of course, it would be a dream to be there in the coming weeks and months. In the end, however, only 23 or 24 players will go to the European Championship," explained Schatzer.
