Doug McKay new coach at HC Meran Junior

The ice hockey professor from Ontario replaces Robert Chizzali in Meran, who took Esa Siren's place during the championship last year. The Merano board is convinced of the straightforwardness, technical understanding and good hand of the new trainer when selecting foreigners. During the numerous meetings with club officials, McKay was able to be won over with a solid concept that goes beyond the next season and finds him one of the main players. McKay expects a team in Meran that is very rejuvenated and hungry for success, which will largely consist of players from Meran.

McKay is no stranger to Italy. In his first year as coach (1980-81 season) he was coach in Cortina. The following winter, the qualified economist was an assistant coach at the NHL club Toronto Maple Leafs. McKay then worked in the IHL with the Muskegon Mohawks (1982-84) and Flint Spirits (1985-86). In 1989-90 he was an assistant coach with the New Jersey Devils of the NHL and a year later he coached the Binghampton Whalers of the AHL.

He then moved to Europe, where he coached in Rotterdam (1992-94), Ajoie (1994-95) and Lausanne (1995-96). In the 1997/98 season, McKay replaced Brian McColgan behind the gang in Meran. Before his guest appearance in Meran, he was also assistant coach of the Mannheimer Adler. After three years in Canada, McKay returned to Italy again in 2003 and played two Serie A seasons with Ritten. In Klobenstein he did an excellent job and reached the play-offs twice. In 2005-06 he coached the Trenton Titans in the ECHL before returning to Italy in 2007, first to Cortina and then to HC Bozen. He played a total of 35 championship games with the white-reds. He achieved 13 wins and six draws and suffered 16 defeats. He coached old champions Cortina again in the last two seasons, but missed the play-offs in both championships and came last.

Doug McKay new coach at HC Meran Junior

The new head coach of HC Meran Junior in Serie A2 is Canadian Doug McKay. For the 57-year-old from Hamilton, it is a return to Passerstad, where he worked 14 years ago.
