As the Toblach-based club announced on social media, Randen Schmidt will be scoring goals for the Eisbären in the new Italian Hockey League (IHL) season. The 25-year-old Canadian hails from Regina, where he played youth ice hockey and spent four years at university. In between, the left-handed shooter played for the Saskatoon Blades in the Western Hockey League (WHL), one of Canada's three major junior leagues, for three years.
Schmidt gained his first experience in adult ice hockey last season in the Big 6 Hockey League. This championship focuses on the province of Saskatchewan and comprises a total of nine teams. Toblach's new man scored 31 points in 20 games for the Carlyle Cougars. Now the Canadian is ready for his first adventure outside of Canada. "With several years of experience in the WHL, the USports League, and most recently the BHSL, he brings toughness, wit, and versatility to the ice," commented the Eisbären.
Siiki ends career
After signing Mikael Saha, SV Kaltern knew that Oskari Siiki would not be returning to Überetsch. Now it has been announced that the 30-year-old Finn is ending his career after winning the championship with the Pikes. "To be honest, I wasn't ready to quit, but sometimes things in life don't go the way you want them to," the striker wrote on social media. "It will certainly take some time for me to accept that my hockey career is now over and it's time to start a new chapter in my life."Oskari Siiki is retiring. © Manfred Sinn
The left-handed shooter played a decisive role in the Pikes' championship title, scoring 68 points in 47 games. Siiki also has 168 appearances in the Finnish top flight and participated in the Champions Hockey League three times with his hometown club, TPS Turku.
"I will never forget how much ice hockey has given me and how many friendships and valuable relationships I've been able to form through it," Siiki concluded. Numerous colleagues congratulated him on his career, including NHL stars Mikko Rantanen and Kaapo Kakko, as well as his teammates from Kaltern, Michael Sölva and Andreas Vinatzer.
