Bardreau whirls, Lipon boxes, Pasquale holds – and Pustertal wins

HC Falkensteiner Pustertal responded to last Saturday's bitter defeat against Ferencvaros Budapest with a strong performance. On Friday evening, Jason Jaspers' team put AV Fehervar in their place. Tommy Purdeller and his team laid the foundation for this with a brilliant start.

The Wolves lost the aforementioned match against Budapest due to two goals conceded within 75 seconds. The Black and Yellows took advantage of a similar double blow on Friday evening at the brand-new MET Arena in Székesfehérvár to celebrate their third win in their third away game of the season. Without the injured Austin Rueschoff, the Pustertalers deservedly won 3-1.

Fehervar, led by former Wolves Ole Andersen and Joel Messner, hadn't shone so far this season. They lost all three away games, but won the two matches in front of their own fans against the struggling Black Wings Linz and HC Innsbruck. Why David Kiss's team has so far been lacking this season – and conceded a whopping nine goals against the Graz 99ers – quickly became apparent. Henry Bowlby's 1-0 goal resulted from a positioning error, while Luca Zanatta's 3-0 goal came after the home side ran into a counterattack while on the power play.

Solidly played to the end

With little of the game going, Fehervar attempted to unbalance HCP with physical play. Kristof Nemeth and JC Lipon engaged in an intense boxing match, at the end of which Lipon's nose was bleeding. Meanwhile, the home fans had to wait a long time for any real action. It wasn't until after the break that the Hungarians found their way into the game, but there was initially no way past Eddie Pasquale, who was once again in brilliant form. With one minute left in the game, however, Darren Archibald spoiled the Canadian's shutout. By this point, the match had long been decided. With more composure, the final score could have been even higher.

Alongside Pasquale, Cole Bardreau once again earned top marks. The center forward once again racked up a tremendous amount of running and provided two assists. Alan Lobis, who replaced Rueschoff in the second line, also did a great job.

The highlights

Pusterer BlitzstartOnly 53 seconds have passed – and the HCP bench is already celebrating. Markus Lauridsen brings the puck to the front of the net, where Henry Bowlby skates it into the net without a kick. Just 70 seconds later, Tommy Purdeller scores a deflection on the power play to make it 2-0.
What's going on here?Fehervar is completely out of sorts and, to make matters worse, concedes a goal while shorthanded. In a 3-on-2 situation, Bowlby sees Luca Zanatta advancing, who catches goalkeeper Rasmus Rejnola between the legs.
Lipon's bloody noseThe Hungarians reacted – but not by scoring a goal. Instead, Kristof Nemeth challenged Pustertal's JC Lipon to a boxing match. Lipon threw his weight, but ultimately had to have his bloody nose treated.
Rejnola and Pasquale strongMikael Frycklund and Matthias Mantinger had a chance to make it 4-0 in the first period, but were denied by the alert Rejnola. On the other side, Pasquale distinguished himself against Istvan Terbocs and Balint Magosi.
No dramaThe Wolves didn't let anything slip in the final period and took the three points. Lipon almost made it 4-0, but his close-range attempt hit the crossbar. Archibald only managed to put the score on the same level.

HC Pustertal is looking to secure its next three points in less than 24 hours. Then, the Black and Yellows will face the Vienna Capitals (5:30 p.m.), who surprised everyone with a 3-1 victory over the previous league leaders, Olimpija Ljubljana, on Friday. HC Bozen also celebrated a prestigious victory against champions Red Bull Salzburg on Friday.
