Bloody scene and penalty misfortune: Bolzano loses in Hungary

After the international break, HC Bozen had to travel to Székesfehérvár on Wednesday evening, a journey of almost nine hours. The depleted Foxes didn't have much to show for their efforts.

Away games in Székesfehérvár are always a tricky task – even when the hosts, Fehérvár AV19, aren't having their best run. HCB Südtirol Alperia was reminded of this once again on Wednesday. Against the Hungarians, who are stuck at the bottom of the table and have a new coach in Ted Dent, the Foxes suffered a 2-3 defeat after a penalty shootout, leaving them with only one point.

Although the international break has just ended, Bolzano is stretched to its limits in terms of personnel. Mark Barberio, Dylan DiPerna, Cristiano DiGiacinto, and Pascal Brunner are all sidelined with injuries. Despite this, HCB was the better team against Fehérvár overall, but only managed to convert two of their 41 shots into goals.

Especially in the final period, the Foxes repeatedly missed their chance to score the winning goal when the score was tied 2-2. The fact that only Daniel Mantenuto's attempt in the penalty shootout was successful (while Fehérvár scored twice) was fitting for this evening.

Bloody scene

There was a moment of alarm just before the second intermission when Fehérvár's Justin Richards was unfortunately struck in the face by a deflected shot. The American player initially writhed on the ice in pain and eventually left the rink bleeding heavily. The game was interrupted for about ten minutes, partly because the ice resurfacer had to be brought in to remove the blood.

The highlights

OutnumberedBolzano are playing with one man less and still take the lead. Misley breaks away and beats Reijola with a clinical shot (14').
Fehérvár is backFirst, a Bolzano goal by Bradley is disallowed (offside by Marchetti in the penalty area), then Fehérvár equalizes. Erdely is perfectly positioned after a rebound (30').
InterruptionBecause Fehérvár's Richards was hit in the face by a puck and lost a lot of blood, the match was interrupted shortly before the second intermission. Even the ice resurfacer had to be called in. The interruption proved beneficial for Fehérvár, as Rymsha scored shortly afterward to put the Hungarians ahead 2-1.
Penalty bad luckThe powerful Bradley equalized for Bolzano: He surged towards the Fehérvár goal at high speed and calmly slotted the ball home (44'). With no further goals scored, the game went to penalties, where Fehérvár ultimately prevailed.

HC Bozen isn't heading home yet, but directly to their next match location. On Friday, the Foxes will be playing away against Olimpija Ljubljana. The Slovenians were defeated 3:5 by HC Pustertal on Wednesday.
