Scored twice: Tommy Purdeller © HC Pustertal
Purdeller's save helps Pustertal to another home victory
The Intercable Arena remains an impregnable fortress: HC Falkensteiner Pustertal emerged victorious on home ice for the eighth consecutive time on Sunday afternoon. A key contributor to the decisive win over the Pioneers Vorarlberg was none other than the player who had recently struggled to find the net: Tommy Purdeller.

The season of the best young player of last year's ICE Hockey League (ICEHL) had started promisingly with four goals in the first seven games. However, the 21-year-old exceptional player went through seven games in November without scoring a goal. The weight lifted from his shoulders on Sunday, when he shone with a brace in the 7-1 victory over the Pioneers Vorarlberg, was all the greater.
The relief was evident on Purdeller's face. When the homegrown talent finally slotted home a rebound after two missed scoring opportunities in the first period, he lifted his head, looked towards the arena roof, and celebrated exuberantly. This moment gave the forward wings: from then on, he was one of the Wolves' most active and noticeable players. His efforts were rewarded with his second goal, making it 4-1. By this point, bottom-of-the-table Vorarlberg had already given up trying against the dominant Bruneck side.
Vorarlberg has no chance
The score was still 1-1 after 20 minutes. However, this was solely due to the home team's inconsistent attacking play and their own defensive lapse. From the moment the Wolves got serious, one could almost feel sorry for the Austrians – especially goalkeeper David Madlener, who was repeatedly left exposed and ultimately had to take the blame for several goals. On the other side, Jakob Rabanser, playing his first home game of the season, had a quiet evening. When needed, however, the Sterzing native, who was cheered by the sold-out Intercable Arena, was wide awake. The resounding victory gave Jason Jaspers' team the necessary confidence for the big match against Klagenfurter AC next Wednesday. Meanwhile, HC Bozen celebrated their third consecutive victory in their home game against the Vienna Capitals.
The highlights
| The redemption | Purdeller initially misses two clear-cut chances, but in the 12th minute the moment finally arrives: After Madlener parries a Saracino shot to the side, the 21-year-old has an empty goal in front of him. |
| How bitter | Pustertal had numerous chances to extend their lead – for example, through the completely unmarked Raphael Andergassen. They failed to capitalize, and instead the Pioneers combined beautifully through the offensive zone before Maier fired a shot into the top corner. |
| To enjoy | After the restart, Lauridsen launched the escaped Lipon, who made a brilliant pass to Ierullo. The Italian-Canadian easily fired the puck into the top corner. Ticar's rebound, following a mistake by Madlener, made it 3-1 a little later. |
| Tired of goals | Pustertal pressed forward and Purdeller scored to make it 4-1: After a pass from Di Tomaso, the youngster simply tapped the ball in. Shortly afterwards, the Italian-Canadian scored himself with a long-range shot. |
| Now it's clear | While shorthanded, Rueschoff steals the puck in the forecheck, skates in front of the net, makes Madlener look foolish, and increases the lead to 6-1. Shortly afterward, Bardreau catches the Austrian goalie between his pads. |
