The next surprise is missing: HCB Südtirol Alperia has come back to earth after two wins in a row in the CHL: Just two days after the Surprise coup against Kometa Brno The Talferstädter lost 0:4 against Mountfield HK in their home Sparkasse Arena.
The Czechs' victory was well-deserved – even though HCB once again delivered a strong performance. However, the Foxes weren't effective enough on offense. Dustin Gazley had the best chance right at the start of the middle period, hitting the post. Mountfield's double strike (two goals within 40 seconds) in the final period broke the home team's neck. Bozen then pushed for a tie, but the puck wouldn't go in.
Quite the opposite: Kurt Kleinendorst's team conceded their third and fourth goals in the end. This home defeat is a painful blow for Bolzano in the fight for a spot in the CHL playoffs (Top 16). Mountfield has also overtaken HCB with two games remaining. As of now, Bolzano is in 17th place out of 24 teams.
The highlights
Goalless first third | The Czechs dominated the first 20 minutes, as evidenced by their 7-1 shot ratio. Bolzano hasn't yet found any solutions going forward. However, the Foxes are extremely compact in defense – and, as so often, they can rely on a brilliant Harvey in goal. |
Two posts | At the start of the second period, both goalkeepers received help from the post. For Bolzano, Gazley found it early on with a wrist shot. Overall, Mountfield remained the more active team, creating more of a goal threat. The alert Harvey, however, always found the perfect answer. |
Double whammy | A bitter 40 seconds for HC Bolzano. While Mike Barberio sits in the penalty box for delaying the game, the Czechs strike twice. First, Alex Tamasi, set up by Ales Jergl, catches Harvey between the legs. Shortly thereafter, Jergl scores himself with a precise shot. |
Now it becomes clear | All three Czech goals came on the power play. After a fine move by Hasek, Alex Gaso shoved the rebound over the net to make it 3-0. A short while later, the eye-catching Hasek provided the assist, but this time it was Simek who was the target. At 20, the youngest player on the visitors' roster elegantly lifted the puck into the top corner. |
HC Bozen's next CHL campaign isn't until a month from now – on October 8th at home against ERC Ingolstadt. Six days later, the final group game is on the road against Lulea Hockey in Sweden. Now, HCB's full focus is on its ICE Hockey League opener at home against Red Bull Salzburg on Friday.
