Forsberg beams: Nervous, tense – and victorious

The Nashville Predators celebrated a dramatic overtime victory – also because a local hero shone.

The Nashville Predators celebrated an important victory in their opening game of the NHL Global Series Sweden 2025. Filip Forsberg and Steven Stamkos provided the late highlights in the 2-1 overtime win against the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Avicii Arena in Stockholm.

For Forsberg, born in Östervåla, Sweden, it was a special evening – and one with a happy ending. With 1:10 minutes remaining, he bravely poked around after Sidney Crosby won a face-off and scored with a backhand to tie the game 1-1. His eighth goal of the season breathed new life into the Predators and gave the nearly 13.000 fans in attendance an emotional moment in the Swede's "home game."

Forsberg against the nervousness

“Of course I was a little nervous all day,” said Forsberg. “It was a great day. I couldn’t be happier that we pulled it off and ended up winning. That was fantastic.”

The final act belonged to Steven Stamkos. 44 seconds into overtime, the veteran fired a shot from the right face-off circle and buried the puck cleanly – his fourth goal of the season, securing the victory for Nashville. "There was that extra momentum today," Stamkos said. "It's one of those games where – like Fil said – you're almost nervous, tense," Stamkos continued. "You have that extra momentum. You could see that (Forsberg) was really on fire today. He had some great chances and you're thinking, 'When is one of them going to go in?'"

Nashville ends losing streak

Juuse Saros made 16 saves, keeping the Predators (6-9-4) in the game after five winless games (0-3-2). On the other end, Arturs Silovs shone with 28 saves, repeatedly preventing an early victory for Nashville.

The Penguins' only goal came from Evgeni Malkin, who scored from a sharp angle in the second period, the puck deflecting off McCarron's stick and Saros' back to make it 1-0. Pittsburgh struggled offensively overall, managing only two shots in the second period and none on two power plays. This marks Pittsburgh's third consecutive loss (0-1-2) and their fifth in their last six games.
