McDavid stops Edmonton's free fall

A sigh of relief for the Edmonton Oilers. After their crushing 1-9 defeat against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday, the Canadians showed signs of life last night (CET).

At home in Rogers Place, the Oilers, who had been so shockingly weak recently, managed a comeback to a 5-4 home victory in overtime.

The recipe for success included hard work (23 checks, 27 blocked shots), strong performances from players who aren't among the team's biggest stars (like two-goal scorer Jake Walman and game-winner Jack Roslovic), and a captain who led by example. Connor McDavid kept Edmonton in the game with his goals to make it 2-3 and 3-4.

Edmonton will try to build on that performance and secure another victory on Wednesday. The Oilers will then begin a seven-game road trip with a visit to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Last night's NHL results:

New Jersey Devils – New York Islanders 2:3 aet
New York Rangers - Nashville Predators 6:3
Edmonton Oilers – Columbus Blue Jackets 5:4 aet
Vegas Golden Knights – Florida Panthers 2:3
