Ottawa Senators sink into frustration mode

A crisis atmosphere prevails in Ottawa. The Senators lost to the New Jersey Devils 3-4. The Canadian capital's poor performance at 5-on-5 is a particular concern.

Frustration was perhaps the most frequently uttered word in the Senators' locker room after the home defeat against the Devils.

“There’s definitely a bad taste in my mouth. It’s frustrating,” said Ottawa captain Brady Tkachuk. “But we’re staying positive; it’s still a long season. Every team goes through a phase like this. Everything will be alright. But I don’t have to sugarcoat it: it’s frustrating, and it feels like we can’t win anymore. But that will change.” They have suffered three consecutive defeats and have lost five of their last six games.

“I think we played quite solidly. Of course, we faced some goalkeepers in great form. Again today, we had plenty of shots on goal and chances. It would probably be even more frustrating if we didn't have those opportunities, but we need to sort a few things out. We need to keep playing and stay confident,” demanded striker Drake Batherson.

Defeat despite more shots on goal

Ottawa had a positive shot ratio of 38:32 against New Jersey - but still ended up empty-handed.

"It's honestly frustrating that we didn't win this game and didn't even get a point," lamented Senators coach Travis Green. "It's been a little different in every game, but for the last three games, we've been talking about playing pretty well but not getting anything out of it. When you create chances, good things can happen. I'd be more concerned if we stopped creating opportunities."
