The Montreal Canadiens made a big statement in the race for playoff spots, defeating the reigning champions Florida Panthers 3-2 in overtime in a heart-stopping finale at their home Bell Centre.
Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki emerged as the match winner, first saving his team with a buzzer beater and then into overtime, where he himself scored the winning goal after just 29 seconds with a simple flick around the goal. Montreal's arena was on fire.
Montreal is in pole position in the hunt for the second wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference and is two points ahead of its two closest rivals, the Columbus Blue Jackets and the New York Rangers.
Ovechkin with 891 goals
Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals scored his 891st NHL goal on Tuesday (local time) against the Boston Bruins, putting him just four goals behind Wayne Gretzky's record of 894. "Ovi" scored to put the Caps up 2-0, but they later won 4-3 to remain undisputed leaders of the Eastern Conference.
