VIDEO | Wild NHL brawl after the game

Things got heated once again on Sunday evening in the world's best ice hockey league, the National Hockey League (NHL). A mass brawl broke out after the final whistle of the game between the New York Rangers and the Detroit Red Wings.

The game between the two Original Six teams has always been a highly emotional affair. This second meeting of the 2025/26 season was no exception. After a hard-fought battle, the Red Wings prevailed 2-1 in New York. The Rangers thus suffered their eighth defeat in nine home games. However, the game itself wasn't the main topic of conversation, but rather what happened afterward.

Detroit player Mason Appleton shot the puck into the empty New York net after the final buzzer, a move considered a no-go in hockey circles. Goaltender Jonathan Quick, who had pulled for an extra attacker, stormed onto the ice in a rage and confronted Appleton. A wild brawl then broke out on the ice involving all the skaters. Detroit goalie Cam Talbot even tried to get into a fight with Quick, but was stopped by the referees.

Earlier, the Vancouver Canucks had defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-2. Defenseman Quinn Hughes was the game-winner, dishing out four assists. It was the Canucks' first win after three straight losses. The Minnesota Wild also emerged victorious on Sunday, defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 3-2 in overtime.

Meanwhile, the Colorado Avalanche solidified their top spot with their sixth consecutive victory. Nathan MacKinnon and his teammates defeated the New York Islanders 4-1.
