Sweden storms to World Cup bronze after debacle

Host Sweden secured the bronze medal at the Ice Hockey World Championship against surprise team Denmark just one day after the debacle against the USA.

In Stockholm, the eleven-time world champion defeated the co-hosts 6-2 (0-0, 3-0, 3-2). For top favorites Sweden, the home tournament ended disappointingly despite finishing third. the crushing defeat against the USA in the semi-finals has left its mark. For Denmark, however, reaching the semifinals was already their greatest success at a World Cup.

NHL pro Mikael Backlund of the Calgary Flames gave Tre Kronor the lead in the second period with a double strike (26th minute/30th minute). After goals from Marcus Johansson (38th minute) and Lucas Raymond (43rd minute), everything looked set for a clear Swedish victory. Denmark faced a second defeat after the 0-7 semifinal defeat to Switzerland.

Mika Zibanejad of the New York Rangers made it 6-2 (56th minute). The USA and Switzerland will face off in the final (20.20:XNUMX p.m./ProSieben and Magentasport).
