Horror for Swiss ski star: Von Allmen's wild flight

The second World Cup race in Val Gardena lasted just twenty minutes on Friday when everyone in the finish area of the Saslong held their breath: Franjo von Allmen was badly thrown off in the Super-G.

These were images no ski fan wants to see: Franjo van Allmen, who started the World Cup Super-G with bib number ten, made a slight error before the first jump. The result? The Swiss skier completely lost his balance in the air, acrobatically trying to counteract the impact on the rock-hard slope. A collective gasp went through the crowd in the finish area.

Von Allmen fell heavily, but promptly got back up and slid down the slope on his skis – until he was caught by his physiotherapist.

The fall ended without serious injury.

The downhill world champion repeatedly hit his helmet hard and briefly clutched his knee. However, his lightning-fast reaction in mid-air likely prevented him from injuring himself.
"That's really pushing the limits." Marco Odermatt

Minutes later, the Swiss skier crossed the finish line to applause. There he was greeted by Marco Odermatt, who was leading at the time. "There were a few close calls. It's really pushing the limits here today," said Odermatt. SRF-Interview. Later, von Allmen himself gave the all-clear: "If you make such a mistake on the outside ski in such a spot, then it really throws you off balance. That was tough, but I'm fine."

For von Allmen, this was another scary moment in this still young World Cup season. He had a bad fall in the Super-G in Beaver Creek. But even then, the incident ended relatively well with just a bruised shin. However, the 24-year-old proved on Thursday that he can also be really fast and successful, finishing second in the downhill race behind Odermatt.
