The state funeral for skier Matteo Franzoso, who died in a training accident in Chile, took place on Tuesday in the church of Sant'Edoardo in Sestriere, with great sympathy.

Family, relatives, friends, numerous active and retired athletes, and all sports groups paid their last respects to Franzoso in his hometown of Sestriere. High-ranking Italian political figures, such as Minister of Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti and Minister of Sport Andrea Abodi, also attended the funeral.


The mayor of Sestriere, Gianni Poncet, said: "Our community is still stunned by this tragedy that has taken away a very special young man." As a sign of sympathy, the municipality declared a day of mourning for September 23. The Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) also suspended its activities on Tuesday.


In addition to family and friends, well-known ski stars such as Giuliano Razzoli and Christof Innerhofer also took part in the ceremony.
