Horrific crash: Concerns for a young downhill skier

The downhill race in Beaver Creek had a shining winner in Marco Odermatt. However, the race was overshadowed by a serious crash.

The Marco Odermatt's victory was a done deal, The ski stars' interviews were already over, the TV stations ready to switch to the next program. But then, as one of the last racers threw himself onto the slope, a terrible scene unfolded in the first World Cup downhill of the season in Beaver Creek.

Slovenian Rok Aznoh, starting with bib number 58, caught an edge on a turn. The 23-year-old then lost control. He crashed into the safety netting and was thrown back onto the slope. Aznoh lost his helmet in the process and lay motionless on the course.

ORF expert deeply affected

"That's one of the fastest sections of the course. That didn't look good," commented a visibly shaken ORF expert, Hans Knauß. Aznoh, who became Junior World Champion in downhill in 2023, was brought to the finish line by rescue teams using a sled and then airlifted to the hospital. There is currently no information available about his condition.
