At the 2025 Annual Congress of the International Luge Federation, some radical innovations for natural track luge were decided.
"We are in a period of transition and change; the development of the alpine toboggan as a new piece of sports equipment is progressing, even if many steps are still necessary. A milestone on this path is certainly the new name and new logo," explains Andreas Castiglioni, Director of Sports and Technology for Alpine Luge at the International Luge Federation (FIL).
Here is an overview of the most important decisions:
New nameThe natural track and recreational sports divisions have been combined under the name Alpine Luge. The International Luge Regulations (IRO) have also been amended accordingly. The World Cups are now called the FIL Alpine Luge World Cup and the FIL Alpine Luge Junior World Cup.
New logo
Everything now operates under the name Alpine Luge, and there's even a new logo. This makes the change visible to the outside world.
The new logo.
Awarding of major events
The congress also announced the hosts of several major events. These include two South Tyrolean venues: The 2026 European Championships will take place in Laas, and the 2029 World Championships will be held in Jaufental. A special highlight will be the 2027 World Championships, which will be held in Igls (AUT) alongside the Artificial Track World Championships.
Russia
Due to the ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine, which violates international law, athletes and officials from Russia will not be allowed to participate in competitions of the International Luge Federation (FIL) in the coming season, even under a neutral flag.
