A crushing defeat: HC Bozen beats itself.
It is and remains a difficult moment for HCB Südtirol Alperia, who suffered a bitter defeat in Graz on Sunday afternoon.

This HC Bozen is puzzling: Two days after the clear victory against bottom-of-the-table Vorarlberg Scott Valentine & Co. suffered a crushing 3-6 defeat against the Graz99ers! This loss was less due to the Styrians' dominance and more to Bolzano's own mistakes. Or to put it another way: the Foxes shot themselves in the foot!
After a strong opening period, in which HCB's in-form Brad McClure promptly equalized Michael Schiechl's opening goal for Graz, HCB suffered an inexplicable second period. The Foxes racked up a staggering twelve (!) penalty minutes in this period, during which they also had to play with two men down at one point.
If everything goes wrong
Coach Kurt Kleinendorst also played a part: After Kevin Roy's goal to make it 3-1, scored by the Graz player during a two-man advantage, the HCB coach called for a coaches' challenge due to alleged goaltender interference. However, because the referees could not find a rule violation in the video review, Bolzano received two further penalty minutes – and in the renewed 3-on-5 situation, the ball found the back of the net for a 1-4 score. But Bolzano doesn't just have to look at itself in terms of penalties (a total of 22 penalty minutes for Bolzano). Its scoring output also left much to be desired. The Foxes fired 38 shots on goal, but only three found the back of the net. Graz needed just 32 shots to score six goals. At least Bolzano didn't give up until the very end, closing the gap from 1-5 to 3-5 in the final minutes. Ultimately, however, it was all for naught.
The highlights
| Answer | Graz opened the scoring with Schiechl beating Harvey with a shot into the top corner (17th minute), but McClure immediately responded. After a rebound, he was perfectly positioned to tie the game at 1-1 (18th minute). Graz then took the lead again in the second period through Currie (precise shot) (29th minute). |
| Key scene | From this point on, everything goes wrong for HCB for several minutes. Mantenuto joins Marchetti in the penalty box – partly due to vehement protests – and Graz scores with Roy on a 5-on-3 power play to make it 3-1. The forward deflects the puck perfectly in front of Harvey (35th minute). Bolzano coach Kleinendorst calls a coaches' challenge, claiming goaltender interference. However, the referees find no violation, and Bolzano receives another two-minute penalty. Graz gets another 5-on-3 advantage and Collins scores to make it 4-1 (35th minute). |
| Results cosmetics | In the final period, Huber again increased the lead to 5-1 on the power play (52nd minute), then McClure (55th minute) and Schneider (57th minute) scored to make the scoreline more respectable. Former NHL star Holzer sealed the victory with an empty-net goal (58th minute). |
The situation at HCB is slowly but surely becoming worrying. The Foxes have only managed to win two of their last seven games. They have a chance to redeem themselves on Wednesday when they visit Linz at 7:15 pm. Meanwhile, HC Pustertal reclaimed the top spot in the standings on Sunday.
