Italy and the personnel problem in the storm

After their first rest day, Italy's World Cup campaign in Romania continues on Wednesday against Poland in Division 1 Group A. The Azzurri are struggling with a personnel problem in attack.

Mikael Frycklund's return home due to injury hits Italy hard. Because no attacker can be substituted for the center position for HC Pustertal, the Blue Team has only eleven trained strikers available. Because a defender was injured in the opening game, national coach Jukka Jalonen decided to bring an extra defender along as a precaution. This proved to be Pascal Brunner's downfall.

Now there's a vacuum in attack. Will the Finn try to fill it with a defender? Wednesday's crucial match against Poland (15 p.m.) will provide the first answer. The Eastern Europeans are the only team to have won their first two matches and could take an important step toward promotion with another victory.

Italy, on the other hand, is already under pressure after their penalty-kick defeat to Ukraine. "The most important thing is that we play as a compact team," defender Alex Trivellato said. The important match between Italy and Poland will take place again on Wednesday afternoon at the SportNews-Ticker to follow.
