Draisaitl becomes the first German to reach 1.000 points.

Leon Draisaitl is the first German ice hockey player to break the 1.000-point barrier in the NHL.

In the Edmonton Oilers' 6-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins, the 30-year-old from Cologne assisted on four of his team's goals and tallied his 1.000th, 1.001st, 1.002nd, and 1.003rd points. Draisaitl is now one of only 103 players in National Hockey League history to reach at least 1.000 points.

“As someone who grew up in Germany, it always felt like a very long way,” said Draisaitl, who has played 824 NHL games. “It was certainly just a dream. I’m incredibly grateful and also a little proud.”

Among the players who reached 1.000 points even faster is Draisaitl's teammate Connor McDavid. Against the Penguins, he also tallied four points with two goals – the first assisted by Draisaitl – and two assists. After the 1-0 goal – against Stuart Skinner in goal, whom the Oilers had traded to Pittsburgh just on Friday – the entire bench congratulated Draisaitl.

"He's such a special player. I can't say enough good things about him," McDavid commented on his friend's special day. "It's no surprise that he's achieved this success, and achieved it so quickly, with so many good years ahead of him."

Draisaitl now has 30 assists this season

“That was a lot of hard work and many people helped along the way,” said Draisaitl. “These successes are always focused on one player, but so many people play an important role in it.”

Draisaitl's assist on the 5-2 goal in the final period was his 30th of the season; only McDavid and Macklin Celebrini of the San Jose Sharks have more. With the win in Pittsburgh, the Oilers now have 16 wins and sit in third place in their division, securing a playoff spot.
