The new super talent who already played in Bolzano

The so-called draft lottery took place in the NHL on Tuesday. It was determined which team could draw first at the NHL draft on June 28th in Las Vegas. The worst teams after the regular season have the best chance of winning this lottery. And so it was only logical that the San Jose Sharks, who had finished the regular round at the bottom of the table, secured the number 1 pick. This year many people watched the drawing with great excitement, as Macklin Celebrini is a real diamond in the rough waiting for the winner.

The 17-year-old is not as highly rated as Connor Bedard, who was drafted No. 1 by the Chicago Blackhawks last year, but he has star potential. Last season, the Vancouver striker collected 64 points in 38 games for Boston College in the US University League and became the youngest player ever to win the Hobey Baker Award, which is given to the most valuable player. Celebrini was also supposed to play for Canada at the Ice Hockey World Cup in the Czech Republic, which began on Friday, but the youngster canceled his participation at short notice, even though he had already played a test match with the Maple Leaves in Vienna against Austria (5:1).

Bedard vs. Clara Instead, Celebrini attended the draft lottery on Tuesday. As part of this, the super talent revealed that his favorite holiday destination was Italy. “I played a tournament there as a child. That was pretty cool,” Celebrini said. In fact, in 2018, when he was 11 years old, the Canadian took part in the so-called World Selects tournament in Bolzano and Neumarkt. The best selections in the world came together. Celebrini played for Western Canada, collecting 14 points in nine games and finishing third with his team. With the American Cole Eiserman, another predicted top 10 pick appeared in the same tournament.

Just like Celebrini, Bedard also connects childhood memories with South Tyrol. Last year's number 1 pick played the same tournament in 2017 - and met a certain Damian Clara on April 26th. His Pro Hockey team won 6-0 against the Italy Selects, Bedard was responsible for two goals and two assists. With 16 points in six games, he later became the tournament's top scorer. A reunion with the Puster goalkeeper could become a reality in the NHL in the next few years.
