With many anniversaries: Toronto wins Atlantic Division

The Toronto Maple Leafs clinched a 4-0 road victory over the Buffalo Sabres at the KeyBank Center last night (CEST), mathematically clinching the Atlantic Division title. This puts them among the contenders for the NHL playoffs.

But the Canadians had much more to celebrate: goalie Anthony Stolarz's 35-save shutout, Auston Matthews' 400th NHL goal and Mitchel Marner's 100th point of the season.


At the end of the evening, these three players were the celebrated heroes, with Matthews undoubtedly taking center stage. With 628 games played, the 27-year-old American is the sixth-fastest ePlayer to break the 400-goal barrier. Even the new record holder, Alex Ovechkin, achieved this feat much later.

With the fourth win in a row and the eighth in the last nine games, Toronto has mathematically secured the top spot in the Atlantic Division and would therefore enjoy home advantage in the first two rounds of the playoffs.

The opponent in the first knockout round has now been confirmed: In the "Battle of Ontario," the Maple Leafs will face their provincial neighbors, the Ottawa Senators. It all starts next weekend.
