Austria’s super talent: “I’m glad I’m still alive”

In America (and beyond), the 19-year-old is seen as a huge talent who could even overshadow a legend like Thomas Vanek. In last year's NHL draft, Rossi was only drafted at number nine - with experts predicting that he was the one who had the greatest potential in his year. A previous draft failed due to his comparatively short height (1.76m). Nevertheless, all goals were open to Rossi with the Minnesota Wild - with the Russian Kiril Kaprizov he was supposed to usher in a new era for the franchise. Because the NHL only started in January due to the extension of last season, Rossi initially returned to Switzerland to the ZSC Lions, where he enjoyed his entire ice hockey training. However, the guest appearance was over after just one appearance - Rossi became infected with the coronavirus. He recovered from that and then played in the Junior World Championships, but lacked his usual class and explained that he felt tired and drained. It later emerged that Rossi was suffering from myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle. This was diagnosed at Minnesota Wild training camp. On the road to recovery Rossi then had to forego exercise and rest for a longer period of time. He now explains in an interview how dramatic the situation was TheAthletic. “They (the doctors, editor's note) told me that if I had played one more game at the U20 World Cup, the story might have turned out completely differently.” After weeks and months of anxiety (“Every time I went to sleep, I was afraid I wouldn’t wake up”), Rossi is now on the road to recovery. He is happy that he is still alive and will slowly start preparing for the next season. “I now have a new challenge in front of me,” explains Rossi.
