Series A2: TJ Caig shoots the Broncos to their first win

A large crowd in the Weihenstephan Arena didn't want to miss game one of this final series. For the Broncos, TJ Caig appeared on the player sheet, but the top scorer was only used in the penalty shootout. Caig will not be fully operational until the third final on Holy Saturday. Otherwise, Philipp Pircher and the long-term injured Daniel Erlacher were missing from Vipiteno. Eppan, which was supported by many fans, was able to play in full. There were also some personalities from the ice hockey world in the stands, such as Doug Mason, coach of the Iserlohn Roosters (DEL).

Vipiteno got better going in the first third, while the guests acted with a lot of respect. No wonder that Gunnar Braito had the first opportunity after just two minutes, but shot the puck just wide of the goal. The Wipptalers continued to put a lot of pressure on, but the Pirates closed their doors at the back and relied on the counterattack. From one of these, Daniel Peruzzo could have almost scored the opening goal, but his shot also went wide. After about ten minutes the pirates took the scepter in their hands, but nothing significant came of it either way.

The opening phase of the second half of the game was evenly matched, with not much happening on the ice. Eppan played extremely organized and closed every small gap. Nevertheless, Patrick Mair got the puck passed nicely in the third minute, but the hard rubber disk only hit the outside post after his precise shot. This shot against the post spurred the home team on, but Sottsas, Eastman and Tobias Kofler couldn't lure Demetz out of his reserve. Shortly before these three opportunities, Jake Newton almost made it 1-0 for Eppan. Sterzing also tried hard in the final phase of the second third, but the Eppan defense touched concrete. Not a great game, but there's far too much going on in this series.

The final third also followed the same directorial plan. Vipiteno gave full throttle, but there was no brilliant idea in front of the goal. Fortune, Goddess Fortuna, wasn't necessarily kind to the Broncos, but the Wipptalers simply made too many mistakes in front of Demetz's goal. Eppan had the advantage of the first high-caliber player, but Fabian Ebner shot just past the goal that Corsi was guarding. In the 52nd minute, Gunnar Braito ran alone towards Mark Demetz on the other side, but the Eppan goalie won the duel against the Vipiteno attacker. Then Stofner and Mair tried, but the puck just didn't want to go into the goal. It went into overtime.

It was very exciting and events unfolded rapidly on both sides. First Tobias Kofler tried, but failed. Davide Ceresa had the right answer, whose attempt fell on the goal line. Then Tobias Ebner tried, but he didn't manage to score the winning goal either. In the final phase the Broncos had a slight advantage. But both Derek Eastman and Gunnar Braito got stuck. After 80 goalless minutes it went to a penalty shootout. Now the winner of this first final had to be determined.

Peter Stimpfl was the first to go onto the ice for Eppan and hit the post. On the other side, Derek Eastman made it 1-0. Daniel Peruzzo then equalized, while Hannes Stofner missed. Jan Waldner also failed afterward before TJ Caig scored the winning goal for the Broncos on his first trip to the ice. Because after that, Patrick Wallenberg and Jake Newton forgave for the Pirates, while Patrick Mair forgave for the Broncos. Vipiteno took the win and is now 1-0 ahead in the series.
