Partschins on the rise: “Never believed it”

The new football season in the domestic leagues is only a few match days old, but a few stories are already being written. One team that has played itself into a euphoric high in the recent past is Partschins. On Sunday, however, Oberliga giant St. Georgen awaits.

The Oberliga is calling for the seventh matchday this weekend, and there are some exciting matches from a South Tyrolean perspective. Leaders Virtus are hosting Rovereto, second-placed Obermais are expecting a tough match against Stegen, while St. Georgen and Partschins, two of the best South Tyrolean teams in the league to date, are facing off. The Lower Vinschgau team in particular will be one to watch, as they have been riding a real wave of success since last season.

Last season, Partschins achieved a small miracle. The first Oberliga season in 48 years was a huge success for the Lower Vinschgau team, which was crowned with staying in the league. The decisive factor was an impressive second half of the season, in which the Lower Vinschgau team collected 26 points and thus secured their place in the league.

After the first six match days of the new season, one thing is clear: Partschins will continue where they left off. With 11 points, they are currently in an outstanding fourth place in the table and will face the big St. Georgen on Sunday as - on paper at least - favorites. Coach Luca Lomi was also pleased with this performance and the positive development of his team in an interview.

SportNews: 11 points after 6 games: Could you have expected that?

Luca Lomi: When we met for the first time after the summer break, definitely not. We were extremely short on personnel. But a few more players joined us, and now we have a squad of 1. We are better positioned in terms of quality than last year, and we have taken the same direction in the second half of the season as we did last season.

A year ago, you and Partschins only had 11 points at the end of the first half of the season. Despite this, the club stuck with you. In retrospect, that was the right decision, wasn't it?

I can only thank the club for their patience and trust. We were promoted as champions, then injuries to key players followed. We showed in the second half of the season what we can achieve with an almost complete squad. It was and is fantastic to work with this group. And I don't just mean the players and coaches, but the whole club, the whole environment, the many fans.

Luca Lomi has been calling the shots at Partschins for over two years.

Wasn't the second half of the season incredibly exhausting, especially psychologically?

Lomi: It was extreme, that's true. We only had finals, one after the other. And there was a big risk that the players would fall into a mental hole with the summer break. The opposite is the case. They are all looking forward to being able to compete against the best amateur players in the region. That's what gave us such a great start to the season.

On Wednesday you played against your former club Obermais: didn’t two completely different football worlds collide?

The FCO has completely different conditions - in every respect. All 23 or 24 players in their squad would be regulars in any top league team. But we have shown what is possible with good organization, discipline, humility and a top attitude.
