Bayern misses chances and has to be content with a draw

Munich (SID) Bayern Munich made an unexpected slip-up and missed out on their 15th competitive win in a row despite their overwhelming superiority. Coach Jupp Heynckes' team missed too many great opportunities and had to settle for a meager 0-0 draw against Hertha BSC. The fact that the Munich team are alone at the top of the Bundesliga and striving towards their 28th championship title, however, was not changed by the respectable success of the capital city team. Hertha's third draw against Bayern in a row only came about because the Munich team wasted a number of chances in front of the goal of the outstanding Berlin keeper Rune Jarstein. Robert Lewandowski also missed several times in his 250th Bundesliga game and failed to score for the first time after eleven home games with at least one goal from the Pole. Even without the three key players James (calf pain), Jerome Boateng (cold) and Joshua Kimmich (bruise), it was largely a one-goal game. The only thing missing were the goals, as there were plenty of chances right from the start. Whether Lewandowski (5th, 18th, 29th, 45th), Thiago (13th), Javi Martinez (14th) or Franck Ribery (36th), FC Bayern could have been clearly ahead before the break. Even though there was no significant drop in tension after the 5-0 gala against Besiktas Istanbul in the Champions League - everyone wants to present their best side in the face of tough competition - the Munich team lacked the last bit of precision and consistency here and there. However, Hertha, operating from a very defensive basic order, was definitely dangerous on their rare advances. Niklas Stark (8th) and Vladimir Darida (18th) at least caused a murmur in the Allianz Arena, which was once again sold out with 75.000 spectators. Thiago was very active at FC Bayern in his second appearance after a long injury break. The Spaniard was the linchpin of Munich's offensive game and signaled that the squad decisions would hardly be any easier for Heynckes in the future. The veterans Arjen Robben and Ribery, whom the Bayern coach left out of the starting line-up against Istanbul, were also active and kept their respective opponents busy. However, Heynckes refrained from making a similarly extreme rotation as he did recently. Instead of making nine changes like he did recently, the 72-year-old made “only” five changes. Even the change of sides did not change the balance of power. Hertha continued to bravely defend itself against Bayern's onslaught, but was barely able to take a breath. Goalkeeper Jarstein remained under almost constant fire, as was the case with David Alaba's free kick (50th), which the Norwegian parried brilliantly. Then it was Lewandowski's turn again (56th) to award a top-class player. The encounter was exciting until the final phase.
