“I and my family would like to thank everyone for their sympathy,” Baggio was told by the national news agency HANDLE The former footballer was attacked on Thursday evening – during the international match between Spain and Italy – in his villa in Veneto (SportNews has reported).

Five armed men had gained entry, locked the family in a room and looted the house. Baggio, who tried to stop the criminals, was hit in the head by a gun barrel and injured: "In such situations, anything can happen. Luckily, I was only slightly injured and the wound could be stitched up with a few stitches. Above all, the fear that has arisen must be overcome," said Baggio.

Baggio's manager, Vittorio Penetrone, spoke of a raid out of the blue: "All security systems have not detected anything unusual. The villa is actually well monitored," Penetrone told the HANDLE.
