The attacker was Luis Ruben Rubiales, a TV actor and younger brother of Rubiales' father, the victim confirmed to the news site "Periodista Digital". The thrower reportedly shouted "scoundrel" on Thursday evening, according to the newspaper "El País".
“He threw eggs at me because he’s disturbed, I can’t explain it,” said the 48-year-old former president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). “I went for him because I thought something might happen to a family in the stands,” Rubiales told Mundo Deportivo. As seen in a video circulated by Spanish media, several people restrained Rubiales as he attempted to attack the egg-thrower. Media outlets speculated that a family dispute may have triggered the attack.
Player kissed on the mouth
On August 20, 2023, during the trophy presentation following Spain's women's World Cup victory in Sydney, Rubiales kissed Jennifer Hermoso, a member of the winning team, on the mouth. Hermoso stated that this occurred without her consent. Rubiales resigned from his position shortly afterward. In his book, originally titled "Matar a Rubiales" (Kill Rubiales), he presents his version of the non-consensual kiss and denounces a media and political conspiracy against him. "I will not change. What happened, happened; I did not lie. I have no intention of returning to the Federation," Rubiales said.
