Juventus wins the cup

In Reggio Emilia, of all places, where Juventus also won the Supercup in January, Andrea Pirlo's team managed to set a small highlight on Wednesday evening towards the end of an otherwise very disappointing season. With a 2-1 win against Atalanta, the record winners from Turin won the Coppa Italia for the 14th time.

The decisive factor in winning the cup was a passionate performance by the much-maligned Bianconeri, who kept the Serie A runners-up in check in a fast-paced final. National player Federico Chiesa became the much-celebrated star of the evening, really outdoing himself in the second half. First he hit the post, then in the 73rd minute he finally scored the 2-1 winning goal. “We have had very tough months that were not easy to digest. “Juventus has enormous experience in games like this and we made use of it,” beamed the winning goalscorer after the end of the game.

The assist for Chiesa's goal was provided by Dejan Kulusevski, who gave Juventus the lead for the first time after half an hour with a pointless shot. The in-form Ruslan Malinovskyi was able to equalize this before the break. Atalanta's offensive player took advantage of the free space in the penalty area and rewarded his team for a strong first half. After the break, Juventus were much more dominant, which primarily benefited goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. Moving farewell for Buffon The 43-year-old goalkeeper legend was able to in what was probably his last game for Juventus hoist another trophy. Atalanta, which has been shaking up Italy's football elite and sometimes even the Champions League for years, remains without a title in its most successful club era to date. Atalanta's last and only Coppa Italia triumph was 58 years ago.

The many Atalanta fans among the 4.300 spectators would have liked nothing better than to travel home to Bergamo with a sense of achievement. The cup final in Reggio Emilia was the first football game in Italy to be played in front of spectators since the start of the corona pandemic. These provided a touch of stadium atmosphere for the first time with chants, flags and banners.

Juventus wins the cup

Out of the championship race early in the league, failed embarrassingly in the Champions League - and yet the Vecchia Signora can lift a trophy at the end of the season: Juve defeated Atalanta in a high-class Coppa Italia final and left their own fans on the ranks cheer.
