In the madhouse of Genoa: The FCS series is broken!

On August 28th, FC Südtirol lost 0-4 against Reggina. Pierpaolo Bisoli then took over the helm at the White Reds – and suddenly “defeat” became a foreign word. The FCS remained unbeaten for 12 games or - in other words - more than three months, but now the series is broken: at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, one of the most beautiful arenas in all of Italy, there was a 0-2 defeat against Genoa.

An average of 25.000 fans make a pilgrimage to the “Marassi” stadium in Genoa - that's a record number in Serie B. It was no different on Thursday: This was a novelty for FC Südtirol, as the White Reds had never played a game in front of so many fans disputed. The atmosphere reached goosebumps level - also because the Genoa fans put in a lot of effort. The club from the Ligurian port city, which is one of the most traditional in all of Europe, is going through a difficult time. Among other things, coach Alexander Blessin was fired this week and Italian world champion Alberto Gilardino took his place - at least on an interim basis.

Genoa deserved the win in the end. The Serie A relegated team dominated the first half, as evidenced by 82 percent possession of the ball. FC Südtirol, where Michele Marconi was on his own in the attack in his starting eleven debut and was hardly able to set any accents, initially did everything they could - with success, because nothing came together for the “Grifoni” and there were even whistles from them the ranks. After the break, the White Reds also had more confidence in their attack and at times one had the feeling that the FCS was now even sniffing out the first goal. But that's exactly where Genoa struck coldly. Particularly bitter: After Jolly Puscas made it 0-1, Raphael Odogwu only hit the crossbar. It wasn't enough for more.

Short and sweet: the highlights 83 percent... ...Genoa had possession of the ball in the first 30 minutes. FC Südtirol constantly has eleven men around its own penalty area, but the “Grifoni” only pose a threat once when top scorer Massimo Coda (six goals this season) narrowly misses from five meters (10th). But hello! 36 revolutions of the pointer pass before the FCS appears in the Genoa penalty area for the first time.
