Obermais is fishing in murky waters at the lagoon

FC Obermais knew that the away game in Mestre would be one of their toughest matches of the spring season. And so, in the end, they came away empty-handed from the Serie C hopefuls – although the South Tyroleans were able to hold their own at times.

Mestre and Obermais are worlds apart. Not necessarily in terms of distance (it's around 280 kilometers to the outskirts of Venice), but in terms of their footballing realities. Here, the Merano district club, considered the only true amateur team in the league. There, the former professional club, which not only boasts a professional stadium but also considerable financial resources.

A difference that was also evident on the pitch. Alessandro Corti (17th, 32nd) and Davide Marcandella (39th) gave Mestre a 3-1 lead before halftime. Obermais equalized briefly through Edoardo Ghiotti (28th) and then hit the woodwork after the break through their vice-captain (53rd). But that was all Merano could muster.

Edoardo Ghiotti was the most conspicuous chief magistrate in Mestre.

Obermais coach Flavio Toccoli, who was suspended and had to watch from the stands in Mestre, represented by his assistant Hannes Mussi, fielded ten South Tyroleans from the start. Only North Tyrolean Kilian Bauernfeind was an exception. Slovakian newcomer Nikolas Spalek, who had only participated in the final training session with the team, started on the bench. He made his first appearance in an Obermais jersey after about 70 minutes. His first start is expected in the upcoming home game against Vigasio. Then the really crucial phase in the fight for survival begins for FCO. The next four matches are all direct clashes.
