Sarntal's successful coach Ernst Eschgfeller: "The collective makes us strong"

Seriously, how would you rate the past ASC Sarntal/Football season? We started the season as a clear candidate for relegation. We improved a lot over the course of the championship and showed, especially in the second half of the season, that we can hold our own in the national league. So you can speak of a very satisfactory season.

So what grade would you give your team? Others should give a grade, I would rather describe my team in a few words: ambitious, determined and hungry!

Who was the surprise of the season on your team? I don't want to name any names because all the players gave their all from the start and improved over the course of the season. The big surprise of our team was certainly the large collective. I had a lot of equally capable players available.

All players, coaches and supervisors of ASC Sarntal/Football are true Sarnen residents. How proud are you to be part of such a project?

Of course, it makes me proud that we, as a purely “village club”, were able to play such a fantastic championship this year and retain the league. The club definitely wants to continue on this path. The goal will be to stay in this league in the long term, even if it will be extremely difficult. In this regard, a team like the Latzfons/Verdings game association is definitely a role model.

Has your contract already been extended?

Yes, with a handshake the President (Georg Stauder, editor's note) and I extended it by one year.

Your goals for the new season? Even though we had a sensational season last season with 44 points, our goal next year will once again be to stay in the league. Because the second year is always more difficult.

Where are the construction sites at ASC Sarntal/Football?

I definitely don't want to talk about construction sites, but there is potential for improvement primarily in the work of young talent. Even more children from all over the valley should be won over to football. As far as the squad for the coming season is concerned, hardly anything will change. The 22-man squad is expected to remain in place and will probably be supplemented with some young players over the course of the season.

Which team do you think was the strongest team in the national league in the 2011/12 season?

Several teams left a strong impression, especially FC Bozen 96 and St. Martin with ex-professionals in their ranks.

How would you describe the level in the national league in general? I am of the opinion that the state league is an attractive and energy-sapping league. All players are in strong physical condition, teams are working more and more on their tactics and game preparation, and many teams have very strong individual players. But as in all leagues, there are very weak games over the course of a season, but also games of a very high standard.

You played at St. Pauls for many years and were most recently assistant coach of the first team for a year. Was it special for you to play against your former colleagues? Since I live in St. Pauls and have been working at the St. Pauls football school for eight years now, the two games against my former club were of course something special. Such games are always associated with emotions and, of course, with the desire to do it particularly well.

Something completely different: Who will be European champions this year?

I really hope that the German national team will win, but I fear that there will be a sensational winner again!
