St. Martin competes in Trieste - Gasser: “A special journey”

On Sunday, a “Mission Impossible” awaits the “Mortiner” in one of the most beautiful football stadiums in Italy. After a fabulous championship that saw them finish in second place, Hannes Fiwickeler and Co. are now ready for the games against Triestina, where the winner can clinch a place in the intereggional final for promotion to Serie D.

Nobody believes in a miracle, but for the people of Passiria the experience of being able to play against the former Serie B club is already a great success. “Now it’s time to end the season. We are calm and will play without pressure. At this point we no longer need to believe that we can work miracles,” explains coach Stefan Gasser. The coach didn't come up with any tactics. “Triestina is a professional team and I can’t expect miracles from my boys. We are tired, but we will still give it our all and try to take something from the two games with us for the future,” Gasser continued.

St. Martin on Sunday without Brugger and Saltuari The first leg kicks off at 16 p.m. St. Martin has had a quiet week. The blue and whites completed two training sessions. On Sunday they have to go to work without Brugger and Saltuari. Knoll could also be missing. The rest of the team, however, is ready for the trip to Trieste.

Triestina under the microscope

In the capital of Friuli, people are looking forward to the duel and a possible promotion to Serie D. After the team missed direct promotion, the pressure in Triestina is high. At the end of the championship, the red-whites had to settle for second place behind Monfalcone and the club from Trieste can only get a place in Italy's fifth highest division through the playoffs. Only Serie D players and ex-professionals from the 1st and 2nd divisions play at the former Serie B club. Among the players there is also a South Tyrolean, namely Johannes Hasler from Vipiteno (17 games, further information is available here ). The top goalscorer of the season, however, is Gianluca Franciosi with ten goals. The “Mortiners” also have to be careful of ex-FC South Tyrol player Christian Araboni (six goals this season) and ex-Mezzocorona striker Luca Monti (seven goals in the current season). The defense is also led by a former FCS player. We're talking about 37-year-old Filippo Vianello. On Sunday, the hosts will be without defender Lorenzo Meula and midfielder Jordi Polo. Around 5000 spectators are expected at the Nereo Rocco Stadium. Coach Maurizio Costantini has opted for a 4-4-2 formation, with Franciosi and Araboni up front. Johannes Hasler, however, has to sit on the reserve bench at the start.
