UEFA reveals the three candidates for Europe's Footballer of the Year

Croatian runner-up Luka Modric (Real Madrid) and Egypt's star striker Mohamed Salah (Liverpool FC) are challenging "defending champion" Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus Turin) in the election for Europe's Footballer of the Year. One of these three exceptional players will be honored in Monaco on August 30th, the European Football Union (UEFA) announced this on Monday when it announced the shortlist. Modric had already been named the best player at the World Cup in Russia.

Who will be the best female footballer in Europe? In the women's category, Dane Pernille Harder from German double winner VfL Wolfsburg, Ada Hegerberg (Norway) and Amandine Henry (France), both at Olympique Lyon, can hope for the award. Who was allowed to vote? 80 coaches from teams that took part in the group stage of the Champions and Europa League last season voted for the men. However, the coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players. In addition, 55 selected journalists from the various UEFA member countries were able to cast their votes. For the women, the coaches of the twelve best European teams and the eight Champions League quarter-finalists as well as 20 journalists voted. Ronaldo could extend his record, Messi comes away empty-handed Ronaldo recently won the election twice and is the record man with four awards. His eternal rival Lionel Messi, who had won three awards, only ended up in fifth place in the preselection.
