Djokovic’s challenge to Sinner and Alcaraz

After the clear defeat in the Wimbledon final, Serbian record Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic is setting his sights on the next goals. To do this, however, he must first get rid of the new tennis stars.

Novak Djokovic is aiming for the Olympic Games in Paris and the US Open. "I still intend to take part in the Olympic Games and hopefully have a chance to fight for a medal for my country," said the 37-year-old after the 2:6, 2:6, 6:7 on Sunday against Carlos Alcaraz.

"Let's wait and see how I feel physically and mentally," said Djokovic. He hopes he can show his best tennis at these two tournaments. In order to beat Alcaraz (21) or world number one Jannik Sinner (22) in the most important matches, he will have to play "much better" than in the Wimbledon final.

Djokovic still without tournament victory in 2024

The Olympic Games in Paris begin on July 26. One day after the opening ceremony, the Olympic tennis competition begins on clay courts at the Stade Roland Garros. Djokovic is still missing the Olympic gold medal in his collection of titles. So far he has only won the bronze medal in 2008. The US Open in New York, the last Grand Slam tournament of the season, begins at the end of August. Djokovic is still waiting for his first tournament victory this season.

He will still continue, said Djokovic. He sets himself "no limits" when it comes to his career: "I want to continue playing as long as I feel I can play at this high level."

In his tenth Wimbledon final, Djokovic had previously missed out on his eighth triumph at the grass court classic in London. In the final against Alcaraz, the world number two was clearly inferior in the first two sets and also missed the chance to write tennis history with his 25th title at a Grand Slam tournament and leave Margaret Court behind. The Australian had won 24 Grand Slam titles. Djokovic had competed in Wimbledon just a few weeks after an operation on his knee.
