After Franziska Preuß won the gold medal, there were some strange scenes. A former star biathlete also spoke out.

There is an interesting and funny trend in the world of winter sports these days: after winning a World Cup medal, you have to cut your hair off! The move became famous at the Ski World Championships, where the entire Swiss downhill team (including coach) bizarre hairstyles. And now the phenomenon is spilling over into the biathlon circus.


On Sunday, Germany’s star biathlete Franziska Preuß was crowned in Lenzerheide world champion in the pursuit and grabbed her first gold medal in an individual race. The cheers and joy in the German biathlon team were huge afterwards - and there were also some hearty laughs. After her victory, Franzi Preuß grabbed the razor - and gave her coach Sverre Olsbu Røiseland a very strange new hairstyle.


"Betting debts are debts of honour," said Sverre Olsbu Røiseland, who had announced the day before Preuss' gold medal run: "If one of us becomes world champion, you can cut my hair." No sooner said than done!

The wife is amused

It wasn't just the German biathlon team that laughed, Sverre Olsbu Røiseland's famous wife also had to smile. Marte Olsbu Røiseland, a 13-time world champion, shared a snapshot of her husband's new hair on Instagram and wrote: "Franzi, what have you ever done to my husband?"

At the same time, the amused Marte also expressed her admiration for the German star biathlete: "That's probably the price you have to pay when you're the coach of a world champion."
