The natural track toboggans are ready to go

In general, only a modest field of participants will be at the start in Novouralsk due to the distance and the associated costs. Of the South Tyrolean athletes, only four athletes made the trip to Russia, namely Patrick Pigneter, Florian Clara, Alex Gruber and Evelin Lanthaler. Pigneter and Florian Clara had already secured their place, while Gruber and Lanthaler prevailed in an internal qualification race and secured their ticket for the first World Cup stage in Russia.

Seven World Cups in four countries – the European Championships in Umhausen as the highlight of the season After the start in Novouralsk, Russia, the natural track toboggan elite will come to South Tyrol in the new year, more precisely to Völs, where the World Cup will be held as a night parallel race from January 4th to 5th. The third station is in Moos in Passeier (January 10th to 12th). The World Cup entourage then makes a detour to Umhausen in Austria, where the highlight of the season - the European Championships - is being held, before heading back to South Tyrol. The fifth World Cup of the season is taking place in Olang from January 24th to 26th. For the sixth stage, Pigneter and Co. are heading back to Austria (St. Sebastian, January 31st to February 2nd), while the final will finally take place in Vatra Dornei, Romania, from February 17th to 19th. Two days later, the starting signal for the Junior World Championships will be given in Vatra Dornei.

The European Cup season also begins this weekend This weekend the European Natural Track Luge Cup also starts a new season. Racing director Karl Damian has nominated Anton Blasbichler, Greta Pinggera, Stefan Gruber and Florian Breitenberger for the opening races in Obdach, Austria. In addition, the entire South Tyrolean state squad, as well as several athletes from the screening squad, will be at the start in Styria - with the exception of the injured Thomas Unterholzner. Following the stage in Obdach, the European Cup takes place in Laas (January 11th to 12th), Unterammergau (January 25th to 26th), Umhausen (February 8th to 9th) and Val Gardena (March 1st and 2nd). Hannes Clara stops

Hannes Clara, on the other hand, has put an end to his natural track tobogganing career. He wants to concentrate on his job in the future. In his career, the 23-year-old from Val Badia climbed onto the podium a total of 15 times, four of them last season (victory in Kindbert, second in Umhausen and third in Laas and Passeier). In the overall ranking last year he took second place behind Patrick Pigneter. In 2010, he was crowned junior world champion in Nova Ponente.

This weekend marks the start of the 2013-14 Natural Track Luge World Cup season. The venue for the first of seven World Cup stages is Novouralsk. At the first stop in Russia only four South Tyroleans were there.
