a Serie B

Brescia had actually managed to stay in Serie B, but now the club is facing elimination.

Brescia on the verge of collapse: insolvency threatens

The traditional Italian club Brescia Calcio is on the verge of collapse.

As the ANSA news agency reports, club president Massimo Cellino has refused to pay the outstanding player salaries for the past two months. The deadline set by the Italian Football Federation expired on Friday afternoon – without any payment being received.

This also dashed any remaining hopes that Cellino might once again provide financial support to the club. He had already announced several times in recent weeks that he would not provide any further funds. The necessary sum of approximately three million euros has not been transferred to the club's accounts.

The consequences are dramatic: Brescia is excluded from the professional football leagues and, after 114 years of club history, is facing insolvency proceedings.

Brescia had managed to stay in Serie B but was relegated due to financial irregularities (SportNews reported).
