FC Obermais will be aiming for the title on Sunday.

Hot weekend: Championship match point and title race

The final stages of South Tyrol's amateur leagues are approaching – and the tension couldn't be greater. While FC Obermais is aiming to convert its championship match point in the Oberliga on Sunday, things are heating up at the top of the Landesliga.

Last Sunday it should have been that time, but in the final meters FC Obermais showed nerves again. The blue-whites lost 0-2 at SSV Brixen, but this didn't secure their first-ever Oberliga championship title. Instead, a rival, Virtus Bozen, crept within four points, creating a thrilling final sprint. Seven days later, however, the championship fate still rests in the hands of the Obermais team; a win over Benacense in Riva del Garda was enough for early promotion to Serie D.

FCO has fond memories of the eighth-placed team from Trentino. In the first half of the season, they achieved a commanding 6-1 victory, with striker Manuel Brusco scoring a brace. Given their recent league performances (two wins in five matches), the clash with Benacense seems timely. After all, the Trentino side have only won three of their last ten matches. However, the double burden could prove a sticking point – Obermais faced the regional cup on Wednesday. The South Tyroleans made it to the final with a furious, but there are only four days left for regeneration.

Regional League: Three-way battle for the title

At the bottom of the table, in addition to Stegen, which has already been relegated, two other problem teams must be identified and eliminated, each of whom will have to take the league elevator down. SSV Brixen is buoyed by its victory over Obermais and could take a huge step toward survival with a win in St. Georgen on Sunday. Should Trento win its relegation clash against Anaune, the Eisacktal team would be saved early.

At the top of the regional league, however, everything is still up for grabs with four games remaining. Ahrntal (57 points), Val Gardena (57), and Bruneck (56) are all vying for the title and the associated promotion. Bruneck has a unique opportunity to take the lead on Saturday and significantly increase the pressure on their opponents. To do so, however, they need a win at home against Lazfons. One day later, Val Gardena will face Weinstraße, and Ahrntal will face Chienes.
