Eleven games, nine defeats, 34 goals conceded: The record of the bottom team in the regional league speaks volumes. In order to end the sporting decline (most recently Riffian Kuens suffered eight defeats in a row across all competitions), Andreas Viehweider has now been relieved of his duties. Matthias Gruber, one of the two sporting directors, is taking over on an interim basis.
Viehweider was only hired as the new coach in the summer and, according to sporting director Stephan Erb, has done a good job. "We and the players were extremely happy with Andreas. But when you only collect four points in eleven games, you have to react, set an example and show that the club really wants to move up. Especially since we hadn't hoped to be so far behind this year," emphasises Erb, who speaks of a new impetus.
Bankruptcies, bad luck and breakdowns
Riffian Kuens did not start the season badly. "We played well against strong opponents. In the 1:1 against Naturns we had two great chances just before the end. Against Bruneck we conceded the 93:1 in the 2rd minute. We have also lacked a bit of luck so far. But it is true that you have to work for it. In addition, up to six players were injured recently," explains Erb. However, he does not want to accept the many absences as an excuse.Riffian Kuens is in crisis. © Social Media
The club management is taking its time in the search for a successor. Matthias Gruber is taking the reins first. He led the sporting fortunes with Erb this year, but was previously active as the club's coach and led the team from the sidelines to promotion to the state league. In order to stay there, the team now needs a jolt.
