On Sunday afternoon, many football fans' eyes turned to Bolzano, where the top match of the Oberliga took place. Third-placed Virtus hosted league leaders FC Obermais on Matchday 26 – a duel that had a decisive influence on the title race.
A win would have given Obermais an almost insurmountable lead, while a loss would have likely ended Virtus's remaining championship hopes. The pressure was palpable on both sides. The game got off to a very poor start for Virtus: In the 12th minute, they missed a penalty, and five minutes later, Matteo Timpone gave Obermais a 1-0 lead with a long-range shot.
But Virtus didn't give up. Shortly before halftime, Arnaldo Kaptina, the player who had missed the penalty, equalized with a header to make it 1-1. In the 73rd minute, Elis Kaptina turned things around with a goal to make it 2-1, securing Virtus the three points that postponed the championship title until at least next week.
Partschins lurks
Partschins, Obermais's second pursuer, faced fourth-placed Levico in their second top-of-the-table match on Sunday. Here, too, the result brought the three top teams in the Oberliga even closer together. Partschins prevailed 2-1.
