South Tyrolean football in shock: Kiens player dead

South Tyrolean amateur football, and especially ASV Kiens, is in shock. Markus Hernegger, a player and supporter for the club, died overnight into Saturday. The regional league match against Terlan has been canceled.

With an emotional post, ASV Kiens said goodbye to its player Markus Hernegger. The young footballer died from heart disease on Saturday night at the age of just 23.

Hernegger, who was still playing in the state league last year, had to end his playing career after his illness was discovered. He subsequently worked as a helper for the club and also served as a linesman on a few occasions.

The regional league match between Kiens and Terlan scheduled for Saturday has been cancelled.
