Virtus dethrones the league leader – Brixen relinquishes the wooden spoon

Whether at the top or bottom of the table, the Oberliga once again offered pure excitement on Sunday afternoon. Virtus Bozen and SSV Brixen were particularly pleased.

Virtus Bozen hosted league leaders Rovereto in a top-of-the-table clash in the Oberliga. Before kickoff, the provincial capital side sat in third place with 21 points. A win would have put them level on points with Rovereto, and thanks to their superior goal difference, sole possession of first place was within reach. Not content with hypotheticals, the Bozen players simply went for it – and celebrated not only a hard-fought 3-2 victory but also their ascent to the top of the table.

A quickfire double from Matteo Timpone (12th minute) and Mohamed Fassih (12th minute) put the home side ahead, and Arnaldo Kaptina seemingly sealed the victory in the 37th minute. However, Andrea Manfredi pulled one back for Virtus just before halftime (42nd minute). Virtus held on for the win, but a late goal from Filippo Vinciguerra (89th minute) left the new league leaders with a tense finish.

Bozner FC narrowly misses out on first place

Speaking of which: Another club from the provincial capital almost took the top spot. How? With a win against St. Georgen, Bolzano FC would have overtaken Rovereto – but Rovereto held the second-placed team to a 0-0 draw. The competition took advantage of this and closed the gap: Mori and Tramin, thanks to their victories, are now only two points behind the new third-placed team. Tramin hammered Ahrntal with six goals on Sunday, celebrating a spectacular 6-2 win, in which Armin Stuefer and Rafael Pomella, both scoring twice, particularly shone.

Meanwhile, at the bottom of the table, the focus shifted to the duel between last-place Brixen and second-to-last Val Gardena. Striker Abdou Magib Mbengue scored the only two goals of the day, securing three crucial points for SSV Brixen. This victory allowed the Eisack Valley side to hand the wooden spoon to Val Gardena and also overtake Partschins, who suffered a 1-2 defeat at Mori. St. Pauls, on the other hand, celebrated a 1-0 win at Benacense and moved up to tenth place.
