Five days after the successful start to the new season, FC Obermais is already facing the next showdown. The newly crowned Supercup winner – On Tuesday, the South Tyroleans won 4-1 against Anaune – will face Caldiero Terme on Sunday in the opening match of the Coppa Italia Serie D. “There is a bit of uncertainty because we cannot assess the new league,” said coach Flavio Toccoli at the beginning of August in Interview with SportNewsNow the moment of truth has come.
In Caldiero Terme, Obermais faces an opponent who, for a time, didn't even consider themselves in Serie D. Although the Veneto club was relegated to the fourth division in mid-May after a 0-0 home and away draw against Triestina in the Serie C play-offs and a worse final position in the table, a few days later, the chance to remain in Serie C arose. The ensuing chaos, however, was unprecedented.
Caldiero Terme between Serie C and Serie D
In Serie B, mass irritation about Brescia, under the leadership of President Massimo Cellino. Financial irregularities proved fatal for the club, resulting in an eight-point penalty and relegation to Serie C. However, the club's registration for the third division was not submitted on time, which was initially considered a waiver. This would have given Caldiero Terme, as a gap-filler, legitimate hopes of avoiding relegation. Two weeks later, Brescia submitted its registration despite the foreseeable rejection. The documents had to be reviewed, and the club was therefore officially excluded, meaning the next club to be determined based on the national rankings – and playoff and cup winners Ravenna ultimately benefited from this.FC Obermais will be playing at the Stadio Comunale Mario Berti. © Caldiero Terme
Caldiero Terme was left empty-handed, but the club didn't give up. The backbone of coach Cristian Soave's team remained intact: captain Lorenzo Zerbato, Nicolo Baldani, Pietro Gecchele, and Carlo Pelagatti – experienced players who are expected to stabilize the relegated team. In addition to the established players, the squad also received a breath of new youth; among the 16 new signings, there are many players under the age of 23. This includes center forward Niccolò Cavallotti, who contributed eight goals and four assists for Oltrepó in the previous Serie D season.
Not only does Obermais start a new era on Sunday, but Caldiero also leaves its (chaotic) past behind with the kick-off at the Stadio Comunale Mario Berti.
