The next traditional Italian club goes under

As the Gazzetta dello Sport reported on Sunday, SPAL will not compete in Serie C in the 2025/26 season.

The Ferrara club officially announced its closure, speaking of a "painful end" after several failed attempts to secure its continued existence both financially and sportingly. Around 50 million euros were invested over the past four years, but the sporting results were lacking. In recent days, it had already become apparent that important documents for the license were missing – today, the final cancellation followed. Thus, after the impending Decline of Brescia probably another traditional club from national professional football.

The withdrawal leaves a spot free in the upcoming Serie C season – this will go to Inter's U23 team, which is the first team to be allowed to move up according to the association's guidelines.

SPAL was founded in 1907 and experienced its sporting heyday in the 1950s and 60s, with several seasons in Serie A. After decades in the lower leagues, the club celebrated its return to the top flight in 2017, where it remained for three years. Its exit from Serie C marks a bitter low point in its more than XNUMX-year history.
